Judith Hotchkiss - Tired of finishing your rugs the same old way?

Do you love the hooking but procrastinate when it comes to finishing? It is often said that the finished edge can make or break a rug, but what does that mean? This workshop is designed to inspire and expand your ideas on how to finish your mats while still maintaining a technically sound edge. While we will not have time to try all 26 finishes, one for each letter of the alphabet, we will enjoy hands on practice of several and discuss the rest.

Topics to be discussed include prep for fine finishing, whipping including good corners and multiple rows of whipping, whipping with alternative materials and herringbone, lacing and other framing prep, etc. The goal is for you to leave with enthusiasm for the finishing stage and new ideas to apply to future projects. Small practice pieces are included but participants should feel free to bring pieces that are ready to be finished for discussion purposes.

Materials to bring to class: scissors and any projects ready to be finished. Instructor will provide samples for finishing, threads, needles, cording, yarn for whipping.

A nominal kit fee of $15 USD will be charged to cover all materials needed will be charged during class.

Ania Knap - Stained Glass Class

Ania Knap is a McGown-certified rug hooking teacher and recovering scientist whose passion for vibrant colors drives her artistic creativity. Her PhD in chemistry and artist’s view combine to define her unique approach to symmetry, contrast and color - artistry and emotion, expressed with the analytical precision of human color perception. Ania offers experienced students a new perspective on design and execution and opens a new world of expression for novices. In her work, she frequently mixes cuts, ranging from #2 to ½ in torn strips, to achieve a desired effect in her finished pieces; experience that she shares with students to help realize their own artistic vision. Anybody with an internet connection is welcomed to follow along Ania’s journey with the rug hooking blog she publishes in collaboration with her daughter entitled, “My Mother’s a Hooker” (https://aniacreativedesigns.wordpress.com)

Ania enjoys teaching open classes and helping her students to expand their skills; the goal is to enable their artistry – to guide students along the path to achieving their own personal triumphs of creative expression.

If you are a fan of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows and would like to learn a few secrets on how to mimic these stunning windows in rug form them please join me in hooking the Solitude Water Lily pattern.

We will discuss the different types of glass used in Tiffany windows, and how to use wool to give a similar effect. The price for the pattern is $35.00 will be charged during class.

Two wool choices are available to participants:

(A) For those who prefer their own personal color preferences, they are welcome to use their own spot dyed wool from their stash for the class. Based on my hooking in a #4 for following amounts are needed for the different motifs:

Lead (black spot dye): 1/16yd
Flower (any color): 1/32 yd (3in x 18 in)
Lily pad (green spot dye): 1/32yd
Water (blue spot dye): 1/16 yd
Hills (any brown or green spot dye): 1/32 yd
Sky ( another blue spot dye): 1/8 yd

(B) A wool kit to complete the pattern can be ordered for an additional $40. Please note colors in the kit may vary from the photo above.

Fall Meeting and Hook-In @Lake Morey Resort 2026 (14 Nov 2026)

Guild Annual Fall Meeting - Lake Morey Resort, 2026

It’s time to make plans to participate in our Annual Fall Guild Meeting, Hook-in, Classes, and Red Solo Cup Auction! Lake Morey will be hosting us again on Saturday, November 14.

We’re keeping the extended day that we tried last year. All seem to really appreciate the extra time for everyone to do everything! Students will be able to participate in their classes, the Annual Meeting, and the after-lunch Speaker.

Another change we are keeping is the move to the upstairs newly refurbished ballroom on the main floor. No stairs, corridors or uneven floors to negotiate for most people. There is an elevator for those who would like a ride. The ballroom is accessed via the main entrance and is grand enough to hold the Meeting/Hook-in, Red Solo Cup Auction and Vendors. One of the two classes will also be on that main floor off the lobby in a large, bright room. The other will be downstairs with a view of the lake.

Elisabeth Mazzilli, guest speaker. “Creating Chromatic Dialogue; Finding Your Artistic Voice in Alternative Color.”

“One of the things that excites me most about rug hooking is choosing colors after I've drawn the pattern on the linen. All of my wool over the last decade has come from repurposing blankets and clothing I find at local resource and thrift stores and so I constantly have to think outside of a traditional color palette when hooking. I use the colors I have available to me in the moment, which challenges my creativity and perspective, and alters the look and feel of my artistic output. Skies are rarely blue, animals oftentimes are hooked in fantastical color schemes, and backgrounds tend to be made from old recycled blankets, since that is the only true yardage I possess. I have been playing with the interpretation of color for years, and just recently have started integrating holes into my patterns, absent spaces in the hooking that is opening new spaces inside me artistically as well.”

We are pleased to announce that our 2028 Hooked in the Mountains Rug Hooking Show will be held at the Killington Grand Hotel in Killington, Vermont. This venue allows us to host a gallery, classrooms for workshops, a vendor area, a Guild store, lodging, social gathering areas (inside and outside) and handicapped accessibility all on site. On top of these key features, the venue is nestled in beautiful mountainous terrain and has an outdoor heated pool and an onsite spa and gym. The location is also centrally located in Vermont.
